Howard Park

Western Australia | Margaret River

Our Review

Over the last 30 years, the Burch family has slowly acquired vineyards in Margaret River and Great Southern. The Margaret River vineyards range from Leston in Wilyabrup to Allingham in southern Karridale; Great Southern includes Mount Barrow and Abercrombie, with Houghton cabernet clones, planted in 1975, all in Mount Barker. At the top of the portfolio are the Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon and the Allingham Chardonnay, followed by the rieslings, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc; next come pairs of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon under the Leston and Scotsdale labels. The Miamup and the Flint Rock regional ranges were established in 2012. The feng shui–designed cellar door is a must-see. A founding member of Australian First Families of Wines. Exports to all major markets. -JAMES HALLIDAY

Howard Park Wines, run by Burch Family Wines, is a pioneering West Australian family-owned winery, producing a range of handcrafted fine Australian wines from the state's premier grape growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. Helmed by Jeff and Amy Burch, Howard Park adheres to a philosophy of continual improvement, excellence and innovation. This drive is evident in the culture of the winery and vineyard where the teams focus on the things that interest them, and control processes in-house; from creating method traditionelle sparkling, to establishing a rootling nursey, and building custom vineyard machinery. Since its inception in 1986, Howard Park’s philosophy and mantra is simple - premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. This founding philosophy ensures that Howard Park uses only the finest fruit from the Margaret River and Great Southern regions of WA. Their uncompromising commitment to quality saw Howard Park exert considerable effort into defining and classifying the vineyards. The Margaret River vineyards, Leston and Allingham, are named after Jeff’s father and grandmother, and make up the cornerstone of Howard Park’s chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon production. In the wild and isolated Great Southern the vast Mount Barrow vineyard was designed from virgin soil with plantings of a diverse selection of chardonnay and pinot noir clones from Burgundy and our own nursery. The Abercrombie vineyard is one of the very oldest in the Great Southern, planted with Houghton clone cabernet in 1974. Each vineyard is diligently managed and viewed as individual sites and blocks, with a heavy organic and biodynamic focus, but without the conformity of certification. Howard Park wines have been some of the most collected in Australia, with the flagship ‘Abercrombie’ Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Allingham’ Chardonnay and Rieslings all widely regarded as benchmarks for their region and variety. The introduction of the ‘Distinguished Sites’ and ‘Regional’ ranges have highlighted the distinctive terroir characteristics of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Shiraz from Margaret River and the Great Southern. Over the years numerous family members have worked in the company with Amy and Jeff’s children, Natalie, David and Richard, all taking up in key roles within the business.
