Lowestoft

Our Review

The premium Tasmanian brand of WA-based Fogarty Wine Group, Lowestoft is Tasmania’s most exciting new label this year. The group purchased the 3ha Lowestoft vineyard and historic house at Berriedale near Mona just north of Hobart in 2019. Its impressive inaugural release from the same year encompasses sourcing from across southern Tasmania and the Tamar Valley. Substantial plantings on 2 properties at Forcett and Richmond in the Coal River Valley bring the group’s holdings to some 200ha, making this Tasmania’s 2nd-largest vineyard owner. Winemaking is conducted at Tasmanian Vintners, the state’s biggest contract facility, in which the group purchased a 50% share. Lowestoft is a worthy newcomer to Fogarty’s lauded suite of boutique wineries across Western Australia, Lake’s Folly in the Hunter Valley and Dalwhinnie in the Pyrenees. -TYSON STELZER

About

The Lowestoft homestead is one of Tasmania’s oldest, built between 1839 and 1850. The magnificent property is located on the banks of the stunning Derwent River in Tasmania, overlooking the renowned Mona (Museum of Old and New Art), and the Moorilla Winery. Originally planted in 1986, the Lowestoft vineyard is home to some of the oldest Pinot Noir plantings in Tasmania. The vineyard is small at just three hectares, with low-yielding, densely planted vines producing some of the most sought-after fruit in Tasmania. Premium fruit is also sourced from very select growers across the Coal River, Derwent, Huon and Tamar Valleys. The iconic, award-winning Lowestoft winesare luxurious and ultra-premium expressions of exquisite Tasmanian terroir
