Our Review

This new Tamar label opened its restaurant and tasting room, the latter of which is shared with Natalie Fryar of sparkling label Bellebonne, in late 2023. The 7.2ha site, planted as Elmslie Winery in the mid-70s, was bought by Tasmanian-born berry tycoon Richard Winspear a couple of years back. Nat and her winemaker husband, Hugh McCullough (Wolf & Wellington), have a long lease on the winery facilities, while Evenfall keeps the estate fruit for still wines made from chardonnay pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. They're produced down south at Tasmanian Vintners by Evanfall’s winemaker Liam McElhinney, who happens to be the head winemaker at Tas Vintners, too. For now, Liam’s using those contacts to source the Derwent Valley and East Coast fruit that supports Evanfall’s homegrown crops. Mathias Utzinger of Utzinger Wines, who owns the adjoining property, is Evenfall’s estate viticulturist, further proof of the strength of Tasmania’s rock-solid winemaking community.
