Rob Gibson spent much of his working life as a senior viticulturist for Penfolds, involved in research tracing the characters that particular parcels of grapes give to a wine, which left him with a passion for identifying and protecting what is left of the original vineyard plantings in Australia. He has a vineyard (merlot) in the Barossa Valley at Light Pass, and one in the Eden Valley (shiraz and riesling) and also purchases grapes from McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. -JAMES HALLIDAY

Bookings are recommended, though walk ins are welcome when space allows. Gibson Wines offers guided tastings across the full range, with the option to explore a focused Shiraz flight for those wanting a deeper look at the winery’s signature style. The cellar door is relaxed and family friendly, with wine available by the glass to enjoy on site. Outdoor seating welcomes well behaved pets, making it an easy and unhurried Barossa experience.
Gibson Wines does not operate a full kitchen, allowing the focus to remain firmly on wine. Guests are welcome to bring their own food, including picnics, to enjoy on the lawns or at outdoor picnic tables. The setting encourages a relaxed, self guided experience where wine can be enjoyed alongside simple, casual fare.
