Our Review
David Cook has worked in the wine industry for over 20 years, principally with Orlando but also with Jim Irvine, John Glaetzer and the late Neil Ashmead. As well as working full-time for Orlando, he undertook oenology and viticulture courses, and - with support from his parents - planted 4ha of cabernet sauvignon and merlot on the family property at Birdwood. In 1993 they purchased the adjoining property, planting 2ha each of riesling and pinot gris, and lifting the plantings of merlot and cabernet sauvignon to 4ha each. In 2003 David decided to commence wine production, a fortuitous decision given that the following year their long-term grape purchase contracts were not renewed. Coobara is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of birds'. This business is no longer operating. -JAMES HALLIDAY
