Our Review
After several years at the bastion of organic Hunter Valley viticulture, Tamburlaine, Aaron Mercer, together with his wife Alison and children Will, Audrey, and Charlie, set out to forge their own path with Mercer Wines. The family-run (and family-friendly) cellar door sits on Hermitage Road, where visitors can taste a diverse and extensive portfolio of wines. Notable because the ethos of the brand seems centric to ease of drinking and accessibility, with deliciousness at the fore. Aaron’s exposure to a wide range of wine styles through his experience across the region, with stints at Tyrrell’s and Brokenwood, in addition to work in France, Germany and California, has helped him hone the classic styles of Hunter Valley semillon and shiraz. Most exciting, however, is the realisation and expression of Mediterranean varieties. Small parcels of sustainably certified fruit are sourced from local growers to create varietal barbera, sangiovese, fiano, montepulciano, sagrantino and tempranillo, to name a few. -HALLIDAY TEAM
