Pinot noir wines to try

By Halliday Promotion

Satisfy your cravings for quality pinot noir with these six elegant wines from around the country.

Pinot noir is one of the most popular red wine varieties in Australia, and for good reason. The thin-skinned black grape might have a reputation for being difficult for winemakers to deal with, but it's certainly easy to drink.

Pinot noir has soft tannins, and its tasting characteristics include floral (think rose petals and violet), fruit (like cherry, cranberry and plum), earth (such as truffle and forest floor), and herb/spice (e.g. clove, licorice, pepper). The variety pairs beautifully with food – you can't go past the classic pairing of pinot noir and duck – but don't be scared to pair pinot with spicy dishes either. Pinot is also great with lightly spiced Thai dishes.

James Halliday once said: “The first problem with pinot is that it is the most reluctant traveller of all the classic grape varieties.” However, once it finds its footing, it settles in long-term. Today, high-quality pinot noir can be find in multiple regions around Australia, including Tasmania, Geelong, Henty, the Yarra Valley, Great Southern, Pemberton, the Adelaide Hills, Orange and more.

The six wines below span three of the those regions – Tasmania, Pemberton and the Adelaide Hills – and all have been rated 90 points or above by the Halliday Tasting Team. So buy yourself a bottle, pour a glass and say cheers to pinot noir!
