Just 15 minutes from Melbourne Airport, Marnong Estate is a wine wonderland. The Sunbury property is replete with luxury accommodation, two restaurants (one family-friendly, the other hatted fine-dining), a petting zoo, state-of-the-art winery and, most importantly, offers both accessible and premium wines.

Led by winemaker Alex Beckett, Marnong is celebrating the release of a new collection of wines that capture the spirit and sophistication of this remarkable cool-climate site on Melbourne’s northern fringe. The launch includes the 2024 Single Vineyard Chardonnay and 2024 Single Vineyard Sangiovese alongside Marnong’s first-ever reserve bottling, the 2022 Blanc de Blancs.

For Alex, who has guided Marnong’s wine program since 2023, these releases represent the ongoing evolution of their young vineyard. “I’m really excited by the potential and personality of this site,” he says. “This is a long-term project, and every season we’re seeing new nuance in vineyard expression because of incremental improvements in viticultural practice. We are so immensely driven to highlight the complex and intense nature of the fruit, which, for us, shows the potential of what is one of Australia’s truly unique vineyards.

Set on the northern edge of the Sunbury wine region, Marnong shares many geological and climatic influences with the Macedon Ranges. “The combination of volcanic soils, elevation, cool climate and a wind-swept nature to the site contribute to our styles by extending time on the vine, slowing the ripening process,” Alex explains. “This enables wines in a light-bodied and refreshing style with bright fruit character.”

The latest collection showcases the site’s growing maturity and promise. Chardonnay and sangiovese are emerging as standout performers, while the new Blanc de Blancs demonstrates the estate’s finesse with sparkling wine.

The secret to Marnong’s success with these wines is rooted in Alex’s minimal intervention winemaking philosophy. “We truly believe in expression of place and do our utmost to not interfere with the inherent character of the individual blocks on our property,” he says. “We aim to simply steward them into bottle, taking as little away from the raw expression as possible. I see it reflected in a purity, a delicacy and a freshness. Our wines are fine boned but intense in character.”

This is just the beginning for Marnong. Already there are new offerings and micro-bottlings soon to be released, including the first Reserve Pinot Noir in April 2026, and Reserve Chardonnay in September 2026. “I’m so excited about the future of Marnong Estate,” says Alex. “We are committed to delving into the story of our site in a more detailed way, as well as sharing the story of that site with all the lovely people who visit us.
