Rhône rangers, at the ready. McLaren Vale winery Yangarra has just released its Single Block wines from the 2023 vintage – including the High Sands Grenache, Ovitelli Blanc, Roux Beauté Roussanne, Ovitelli Grenache, Hickinbotham Clarendon Grenache, and King’s Wood Shiraz – as well as the 2022 Ironheart Shiraz.
Winemaker and general manager Pete Fraser, champion of Rhône varieties like grenache, grenache blanc, and roussanne, and receiver of many Halliday (and other) awards – including 2016 Winemaker of the Year – says the 2023s, which are all produced from Yangarra’s certified organic and biodynamic single vineyard, are “among the prettiest and most refined expressions we’ve seen from the estate”.
The 2023 vintage was more challenging than the previous 2021 and 2022 seasons – comparable with 2011, says Pete. But, “looking back over the past vintages, it’s the cooler, more refined years that tend to evolve best in bottle and reward long-term cellaring.
“I love the precision, energy and finesse of the 2023s,” he adds.
