Wednesday October 5 marks the launch of the 2022 Wynns Premium Release.

Wednesday October 5 marks the release of the new vintages of Wynns’ luxury portfolio – the 2022 Wynns Premium Release

Four highly anticipated Coonawarra reds are included: The Wynns 2020 Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside the 2019 vintages of Wynns’ flagship John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, Michael Shiraz, and the Davis Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon – a wine sourced from Senior Winemaker Sue Hodder’s favourite vineyard.

Wynns is led by an experienced and esteemed winemaking team of Sue Hodder, Sarah Pidgeon and Chris Plummer, alongside viticulturist Ben Harris. This year Sue is celebrating her 30th vintage at Wynns.

The Wynns famous triple gabled winery.

“Our 2022 Premium Release comprises three special wines from the 2019 vintage and one from the 2020 vintage. Our flagship wines, John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, Michael Shiraz and Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon return, alongside our single vineyard wine made from my favourite vineyard – Davis.

"These four elegant wines are a fitting collection to toast my 30th year at Wynns in 2022,” says Sue.

The Wynns Estate was founded in 1891 by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch who planted the vineyards and completed the famous triple gabled winery that features on Wynns' iconic labels. David Wynn purchased the winery and vineyards in 1951, and renamed the property Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Today, Wynns is one of the region's premium wine producers, and holds the longest established vineyard sites in Coonawarra. Coonawarra is famed for its regionally specific terra rossa soil and Wynns is home to some of the oldest vines that put the region on the map.

The 2022 Wynns Premium Release includes:

2020 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

2020 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

Medium crimson red with a dark core. Dark and subdued cola type aromas with mint and lavender on the nose. Well balanced tannins with dark but lighter fruit. The finish is long and even. Halliday Wine Companion, 95 points.

Wynns Black Label Cabernet is a true icon of Australian wine. First produced in 1954, it has a reputation for ageing gracefully and displaying excellent varietal and regional characteristics. The wine is produced from only the top quality 20 to 25 per cent of cabernet sauvignon fruit grown in the terra rossa vineyards.

Wynns' perfect pairing: Salmon fillets poached in a light miso broth.

RRP $44.99 | Drink to 2040

2019 Wynns Davis Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Wynns Davis Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Dark red with a deep core. Fresh beautiful violets with red and dark berries on the nose. The 2019 Davis moves effortlessly through the palate; intense cassis with mint. The fine powdery tannins will need time to integrate with the intense fruit. Halliday Wine Companion, 97 points.

In the best Coonawarra vintages, the Wynns team has the privilege of selecting one single cabernet vineyard to bottle. In 2019 they chose the Davis Vineyard. Named after William Davis, son of local Joseph Davis and Sarah Sharam, Davis is one of the oldest cabernet blocks in Coonawarra. At only 2.5ha, this block was planted by Wynns as a non-clonal selection on own roots in 1957.

Wynns' perfect pairing: Lamb shanks or lentil and chickpea soup.

RRP $79.99 | Drink to 2052

2019 Wynns Michael Shiraz

2019 Wynns Michael Shiraz

Deep red with hints of purple. Initially restrained but opens up to aromas of fragrant dark berries. Underlying black pepper and dried mint add interest. The palate is poised, juicy and fresh. Flavours of classic raspberry fruit ripeness spicy shiraz are long on the palate with fine tannins. This is a wine of freshness and power that will reward good cellaring. Halliday Wine Companion, 97 points.

The Michael Shiraz is Wynns Coonawarra Estate's best-of-vintage shiraz, and is named after David Wynn’s young son. A legend of the Australian wine story, this wine is made in small quantities and only in exceptional vintages.

Wynns' perfect pairing: Mushroom risotto.

RRP $149.99 | Drink to 2052

2019 Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon

2019 Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon

Intensely dark at its core with a deep crimson hue. An attractive lift of violet adds floral perfume to its bright red and dark cherries, with deep undertones of chestnut and bitter dark chocolate imparting a brooding complexity on the nose. The near ideal conditions offered by 2019 have produced a brightly lit John Riddoch which flows elegantly without excess weight. Its vivid red and black forest berries sit within a classical medium-weighted frame, before they extend with great persistence to a long finish that is marked by an impression of sandalwood and finely detailed tannins. Halliday Wine Companion, 97 points.

First made in 1982, the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is Wynns’ flagship wine. It's made in small quantities, from the best available fruit grown on the estate's extensive cabernet sauvignon plantings in the heart of the terra rossa soil.

As a definitive Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon, the John Riddoch is only made when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available. Less than one per cent of the top-quality cabernet sauvignon grapes are included in the final wine.

Wynns' perfect pairing: Hainanese Chicken Rice.

RRP $149.99 | Drink to 2052

The 2022 Wynns Premium Release is available from fine wine retailers across Australia or via wynns.com.au.
